Kylie, Kim, Angelina, seems like everyone is getting botox and dermal fillers to enhance their natural beauty. What are fillers and are they right for you? Here’s a bit of Fillers 101 to get you started.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are small injections of gel that fill in wrinkles and add volume. They can also rejuvenate hands, resharpen jaw lines, and fill in sunken acne scars. Each procedure is non-surgical and often can be completed in one office visit.
What are they made of?
Most dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that is already in our skin. HA can hold 1000x its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid filers provides hydration and shape while plumping up your skin and filling in lines. The body naturally absorbs the HA in 6 to 12 months, depending on the patient.
Examples of HA fillers offered by Lunasol Medspa include:
• Juvéderm (Juvéderm XC, Voluma, Volbella, Vollure)
• Restylane (Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne)
• Belotero Balance
Other fillers:
• Bellafill (formerly known as Artefill) uses polymehylmethacrylate (PMMA,) a synthetic substance used for create structure and firmness.
• Radiesse is often used for deeper lines and winkles. It is made of Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA,) which helps stimulate collage production while filling in lines and wrinkles.
How often will I need to get injected?
How often you need fillers really depends on how your body breaks down the fillers, location of treatment and what filler is used. HA fillers often last 6 - 12 months, while non HA fillers can last longer than one year. Injections to fill in the lips will not last as long as those in the nasolabial folds. Synthetic fillers often last longer.

Because fillers are so common, there are now so many to choose from. Your expert provider can help customize a plan based on your concerns, medical history and goals.
Will it hurt?
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but every effort is made it minimize pain and anxiety. Before the procedure, you may be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. Many fillers also have lidocaine to help decrease discomfort during and after the treatment.
