WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS AND HOW DO THEY WORK IN SKIN?
Injectable soft tissue fillers are primarily made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring enzyme in the body that helps plump and add moisture to the skin. By injecting this into the face and body where volume has been lost or where there are wrinkles and lines, it helps ‘plump’ and ‘fill’ in the area for a smoother surface. The most common brands of dermal filler that we use at our office include Juvederm®, Juvederm Voluma®, Juvederm Volbella®, Restylane® and Belotero®.
WHAT AREAS OF THE FACE AND BODY CAN BE TREATED WITH DERMAL FILLERS?
We most commonly fill areas of the face (and specific dermal fillers are created for specific areas and needs of the face), however, dermal fillers can also be used on the hands – Radiesse is great for helping hands appear less ‘boney’ or ‘veiny’ and more smooth and youthful.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DERMAL FILLERS?
No other treatment is able to safely and subtly restore the natural volume that is lost in our face over the course of time. With each decade we produce less collagen which is what ‘holds up’ our face and gives it that smooth, lifted appearance that we remember from when we were young. Dermal fillers replenish what is lost, and when done right (by an experienced professional with great technique), the ‘work’ should look almost ‘invisible’ to the naked eye.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
Dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years depending on the brand. Because dermal fillers are not permanent (they are slowly reabsorbed by the body over a few months), we can also adapt and customize treatment to your changing needs.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DERMAL FILLERS?
We always conduct a thorough aesthetic consultation with patients before performing any major aesthetic procedure like dermal filler injections. Most patients who are experiencing everything from the first signs of aging to more progressive volume loss will be a great candidate for fillers, as long as the procedure is done by a licensed, expert professional.
In order to minimize the risk of possible side effects and complications of injections please follow these simple steps:
Pre-Treatment Instructions for Injectables
-
Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)
-
Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications, if possible for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, ibuprofen, Aleve, aspirin and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
-
Schedule your filler and neuromodulator (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau) appointments at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation. Results from the filler and neuromodulator injections may take approximately 4 to 7 days to begin to appear. Also, bruising and swelling may be apparent in that time period.
-
Please reschedule your appointment with us at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash, cold sore or blemish in the area.
-
If you have a history of cold sores please let your provider know, they may prescribe an anti-viral medication prior to treatment.
-
Be sure to eat and drink before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of lightheadedness during your treatment.
You are not a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Post-Treatment for Neuromodulators
1. Please do not manipulate or massage the treated area for 3 hours following treatment. Delay receiving facial or laser treatments after injections for at least 10 days. Ask your provider if you are not sure about the time frame of certain services
2. Recent studies have shown that moving treated muscles for 10-15 minutes immediately after neuromodulator treatments may speed the onset of effect.
3. Keep your head higher than your heart for 4 hours after your treatment. This will prevent the medications used from tracking into the orbit of your eye and causing drooping eyelid.
4. Depending on the medication used, dosing, and your body chemistry, results may begin to be seen in 4-7 days. Full effect should be seen 2 weeks after your treatment . Please keep your follow up appointment to assess to see if a touch up or adjustment needs to be made. You are charged for the amount of product used and will be charged for any used during any touch-up or subsequent appointments.
-
Do NOT perform activities involving straining, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for 12 hours after treatment. Excessive heat generated may cause breakdown of the medication.
Post-Treatment Instructions Dermal Filler
-
Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area, unless instructed by your provider.
-
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
-
Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.
-
Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excess swelling.
-
If you have swelling you may apply a cool compress for 15 minutes each hour.
-
Use Tylenol for discomfort.
-
Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.
-
Take Arnica to help the bruising and swelling, starting at least 2 days prior to injections.
